School Health
In order for students in Alaska to become College, Career and Culturally Ready Graduates, it is important that they feel healthy (both physically and emotionally) and safe in school. It is difficult for students to learn if they are hungry, lack sleep, are homeless, chronically ill or depressed, are experiencing abuse or have experienced trauma.
Evidence shows that the health of students is strongly linked to their academic achievement, and that the academic success of youth is strongly linked with their health and their health status in the future.
School health programs and policies aimed at preventing or reducing risk behaviors and other health problems and strategies for increasing protective factors among students can have a positive effect on both their health and academic achievement.
The Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child Model promotes the health and well-being of students, staff, classrooms and schools by developing an environment that is most conducive to effective teaching and learning. The model calls for a collaborative approach to learning and health, across the community, across the school and across sectors to meet the needs and reach the potential of each child.
