Tier 1: Whole School Prevention
Tier 1 Strategies are aimed at encouraging better attendance for all students and at preventing absenteeism before it affects achievement. Strategies to use in Tier 1 may include: Wellness checks-outreach to students and families; Discussing the impact of absences on grades; Identifying barriers; Developing robust preventions; and Monitoring/documenting daily class attendance.

School Breakfast
School breakfast programs are an effective strategy to reduce absenteeism and improve academics. Multiple studies show students who participate in school breakfast have improved attendance, behavior, and academic performance as well as decreased tardiness.
Health Services
While it's essential for students to stay home when contagious, it's equally important for them to learn how to manage feeling mildly unwell while still engaging in school.

- Know the school's attendance policy – incentives and penalties.
- Students and families can keep track of attendance to be sure absences are not adding up.
- Seek help from school staff, other parents, or community agencies if you need support.
- Make sure your teens are not missing class because of challenges with behavioral issues or school discipline policies. If any of these are problems, contact the school and work with them to find a solution.
